What's the job?
The HR Manager maintains and enhances the organization's human resources by planning, implementing, and evaluating employee relations, policies, programs, and practices. Active listening and responding to employee concerns, some travel for various conferences/training seminars, active learning that leads to understanding nuances and implications of information received relative to its potential impact on problem-solving and decision-making. Assisting management team in maintaining an issue-free work environment and effective time management.
- Day-to-day Human Resource responsibilities in a union plant workforce of 100 - 140 employees comprising hourly-paid crafts employees, skilled and semi-skilled machine operators, laborers, professional, clerical, and salaried supervisory personnel.
- Maintains knowledge of industry trends and employment legislation and ensures compliance.
- Responsibilities include directing recruiting and interviewing activities involving hourly-paid maintenance and production candidates and salaried candidates to adequately staff the plant according to plant needs.
- Ensures compliance to Corporate Internal Control Reference Framework (ICRF), in control areas of HR Policy and Organization.
- Participates in developing department goals, objectives, and systems, including Effective Performance Management.
- Will oversee the administration of benefits program and manage the new hire orientation process. Will ensure that the Training Specialist designs training plans to enhance employee skills using a needs analysis and formalized succession format to ensure Norwood's plant's future by focusing on developing and maintaining a competent, professional workforce.
- Will have oversight and direct supervision of a Human Resources Admin/Coordinator.
- Coach and counsel plant managers, management teams and employees on employee relations issues.
- Investigation and resolution of employee relations problems, anticipate problems whenever possible, and develop, recommend, and initiate appropriate steps for resolution. Consults with the Regional HR Manager and legal counsel as appropriate.
- Internal contacts involve supervisory personnel throughout the plant, as well as their subordinates; contacts also involve Corporate Human Resources personnel.
- Has significant latitude for un-reviewed actions and the exercise of independent judgment in establishing and implementing policies and procedures, working in concert with the Regional HR Manager and Corporate Support.
- Internal contacts involve management/supervisory personnel throughout the plant, as well as their subordinates; contacts also involve Corporate Human Resources personnel.
- Outside contacts may involve recruiting sources, state and federal agency representatives, insurance carriers, and community service agencies.
- Significant problem solving involving in-depth investigation and resolution of employee complaints, root cause analysis of incidents, and recommendations for appropriate disciplinary actions for employees.
- Conducts exit interviews, analyzes data and makes recommendations to the management team for corrective action and continuous improvement.
Required Qualifications
What do you bring?
- 4-year Degree in Human Resources or related field
- Experience with union labor relations in a union environment
- SHRM/PHR certified preferred
- Knowledge of HR Systems and databases
- Demonstratable experience with Human Resource metrics
- In-dept knowledge of labor law and best practices
- Familiarity with MS Office applications (word, excel, outlook, power-point)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization. Strong presentation skills.
