Job Summary The position of Senior Mechanical Engineer leads the sub-discipline of Engineering ensuring the maximization of plant uptime in that discipline by minimizing equipment downtime and breakdowns, through cost-effective implementation, coordination and leadership of Predictive, Preventive and Corrective Maintenance strategies.
This position develops, coaches and mentors the Engineers & Engineer Technicians.
The incumbent has the responsibility of ensuring adherence to all Health and Safety protocols in all areas under his/her purview, while ensuring strict adherence to Good Manufacturing Practices and Quality Standards.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesDevelop, implement, and monitor operating systems and work procedures by creating and updating Standard Operating Procedures and Standard Maintenance Procedures to maximize Plant and Department efficiency.Develop cost-efficient Predictive, Preventative & Corrective maintenance strategies for all Plant equipment.Oversee breakdown/ unplanned repair activities on all relevant machines and equipment related to the glass manufacturing process.Lead the team in the planning and development of Scope of Works for the repairs, installation, modification, and test-running of all existing and new equipment as required.Oversee the execution of projects, ensuring on-time-in-full delivery of Scope of Works. Account for variations and gaps and provide a secondary scope to close gaps.Provide technical guidance in the planning, development and implementation of maintenance systems and procedures, while adopting Lean Manufacturing principles.Oversee the completion of Engineering weekly plan. Direct work of Engineers to meet quality and on-time requirements, address Production challenges and communicate to appropriate Leadership.Prevent the recurrence of major downtime by ensuring RCAs and Corrective Actions are completed as scheduled.Recommend innovative processes and technological changes to improve machine efficiency and product quality.Assist with sourcing and acquiring new equipment, spares, tools, engineering contracted services and any other asset or service required for the department to achieve its goals and objectives.Coordinate with Inventory/Stores management to ensure all departmental critical spares and stock are available for use and repairs and/or plant operations are not hindered from lack of spares.Ensure management of equipment information through the CMMS system. Oversee full completion of PMs and CMs within the specified timelines.Provide accurate and comprehensive analytics, trends, and other appropriate data-driven reports (including RCA's) to inform effective decision- making.Prepare plans and budgets as required. Control expenses by scheduling budgeted expenditure, monitoring cost variances, and implementing corrective actions to mitigate exceeding budget.Liaise with relevant parties to ensure timely execution of Plant risk assessments, toolbox sessions, job safety analysis, proper job set-up and testing.Administer Development Needs Assessment and collaborate with HR to design, implement, and evaluate training and development programs to close gaps.Monitor, coach, mentor, guide, and direct subordinates ensuring that a high level of technical ability/skill within the Mechanical Engineering department is maintained.Effectively co-ordinate job rotation and cross-training. Prioritize jobs considering impact to Production and Equipment downtime and assign department labor accordingly to ensure timely and effective repairs.Lead and guide direct reports with first line response to IR and HR situations.Ensure timely setting of department KPIs and completion of cyclical performance appraisals.Comply with the Company's/ Department's procedures and policies belonging to the Quality Management System and the Health, Safety & Environmental Management System.To fulfill the legal duties of the Occupational Safety & Health Act 2004 as an employee.Perform any other related duties as required by the job function, or as instructed by the Manager or anyone designated to act on their behalf.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Minimum Education and Qualifications
- MSc in Manufacturing Engineering & Management or MSc in Engineering Management.
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
- At least twelve (12) years' experience in a similar position, five (5) of which must be at senior/leadership level.
- Knowledge of glass manufacturing processes, machinery and equipment will be an asset.
- A working knowledge of computerized maintenance management operating systems.
- Competency in all areas of Plant Operations inclusive but not limited to Utilities, Process Operations, Packaging, Batch operations.
