Job Description:Position Summary:
Reporting to the Vice President, Climate, the Director of Natural Climate Solutions Strategy, will be responsible collaborating with and coordinating conservation work across departments and geographies in service of Audubon's Natural Climate Solutions (NCS) strategy. This role will work with and across state, regional, and national programs to identify and support NCS program work, work with teams to optimize NCS benefits where appropriate, and connect practitioners to support community of practice engagements. They will identify and communicate state and local NCS policy and funding opportunities across our network footprint, and work with the appropriate state and national staff to leverage and connect Audubon expertise and resources that lead to on the ground NCS benefits.
The Director will also serve as part of Audubon's climate team with as part of our coordinated efforts to advance climate solutions through conservation work. The Director will work closely with state and program leaders to align and amplify this strategy, will represent Audubon to external audiences and funders, and provide connections to technical advice for local and regional offices. They must have a background in NCS fundamentals including a expertise related to carbon markets, best practices in monitoring and validation of carbon sequestration, and familiarity with emerging biodiversity credit markets. The Director will feel comfortable working through others, serve as a central connector for distributed work, and be a strong storyteller with an ability to aggregate impacts across the strategy to share how this work supports shared objectives to protect birds and biodiversity, and address climate change.
In addition, the Director must possess a thorough understanding of our distributed national network, building and leading internal and external coalitions, facilitating a community of practice, and demonstrated expertise in current climate change mitigation and energy policy issues - including climate adaptation, carbon markets, and conservation best practices. This role will focus on supporting the implementation of Audubon's climate priorities through our organizations state and regional network for successful execution.
Compensation:
Salary range based on geo-differentials:
- $90,000-$105,000/year = National
- $100,000-$115,000/year = Alaska, CA (not San Francisco), Connecticut, D.C., Chicago, Oyster Bay, NY
- $110,000-$130,000/year = NYC (not Oyster Bay), San Francisco, Seattle
Additional Job DescriptionEssential Functions- In partnership with the Vice President, Climate, support development and execution Audubon's strategic priorities on natural climate solutions as complimentary to our other climate and clean energy goals,
- Identify, support, and coordinate this work by and with internal teams at the national and state level to identify coordination opportunities, build partnerships across teams, and serve as a central contact point for NCS related engagements.
- Represent Audubon in coalitions with other organizations focused on state and local based NCS policy as needed.
- Liaise with National and State staff to identify, understand, prioritize and support positive policy opportunities and/or to oppose harmful policy changes related to this strategy.
- Work collaboratively with state based leadership to develop and support execution of state based advocacy efforts on behalf of NCS programs and projects.
- Effective partner to the VP and Development team in support of fundraising efforts.
- Work closely with Audubon's communications team to tell the story of Audubon's state-based NCS work effectively communicating complex policy issues to non-technical audiences.
- Use both qualitative and quantitative analysis to make the case for policy interventions and appropriate metrics.
- Promote an organizational culture and structure that fosters cooperation, communication, collaboration, respect, teamwork, and trust.
- Partner with Audubon staff to ensure that equity, diversity, inclusion, belonging and justice principles are incorporated and followed in all aspects of our climate strategy work.

Qualifications and Experience:- Bachelor's degree in political science, public policy, communications, natural resource management or related field required; an equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
- 10+ years' progressive, professional experience in government relations, advocacy, public relations, conservation or natural resource management, and/or public service.
- Working knowledge of climate change and natural climate solutions policy, strong connections with leading experts in the field and with funders of climate change work is plus.
- Exceptional project management skills; including managing complex or multiple projects through to success, meeting project deadlines, and coordinating the work of key staff and partners.
- A self-starter, one who is able to work collaboratively with staff at multiple career levels.
- Proven record of building and activating diverse coalitions to successfully advance policy or program outcomes.
- Experience working in a decentralized organization that coordinates strategies for both local and national legislative issues.
- Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills that can be adapted to reach a wide range of individuals and used to build consensus. Ability to synthesize and communicate technical and complex information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other web-based products.
- Must have a flexible approach to work, with a willingness to travel nationally as needed.
